We all have those funny tid-bits about ourselves that we have to laugh at when we are about the business of not taking ourselves too seriously. Admit to one or two and ask about the other person (without being a meddlesome busybody of course!). A mutual laugh always warms things up. One of my own quirks is that I refuse to leave the house without lipstick and I must at all times carry a fountain pen in my purse. Okay, that's two quirks and they're not especially funny, but when I grow to be an eccentric old lady and won't leave the house without fuchsia lipstick, then it will be funny...especially with shoes to match.

![]() Perhaps you have found a new penpal and anxious to put pen to paper and start the conversation but have no idea where to begin. Begin as you would with any conversation. Introduce yourself and ask questions. The possible topics are endless because everyone has a story. A natural place to start is with a short summary of who you are and what you do. That is Thing One, your introduction. Thing One is naturally followed by Thing Two: tell about the moment that sparked your interest in letter writing. Any earnest penpal will find this interesting and will happily reciprocate with their own "letters matter" moment. |
